Mental Health Awareness Week 9th-15th May

Mental Health Awareness Week 9th-15th May This week we want to lend our support to Mental Health Awareness Week which is happening from the 9th to 15th May. This year’s official theme is ‘loneliness’, which after a global pandemic, feels even more pertinent.   Loneliness affects many of us at one time or another and can be both the driver for, and a product of poor mental health. Across the week, we want to encourage our workforce to connect with friends, families, colleagues and communities. In a world glued to technology and with the increase of home and hybrid working, it is more important than ever that we connect with each other in meaningful ways.  For information and support on mental health issues you can visit: www.mentalhealth-uk.org www.mind.org.uk www.samaritans.org

Supporting The African Schools Improvement Trust

Supporting The African Schools Improvement Trust Our project at Wimbledon High School involves the construction of a new three storey sixth form centre including a large hall and basement.  The project also requires the partial reconfiguration and refurbishment of existing rooms within the Junior School.  Much of the school furniture is being updated and replaced as part of the refurbishment, which has meant that a lot of good quality existing furniture is being discarded.  Rather than throwing away these items, we agreed with the school that they could be passed on to organisations in need of resources.  Our site manager Lewis met with an organisation called The African Schools Improvement Trust, who were set up to support some of the poorest schools in Africa.  We organised for the furniture to be transported to a new school that had recently been built in Ghana, the only school within a very large area.   We recently received confirmation that the furniture had arrived safely along with images of it in use! We are really pleased to know that it has has gone to a good home and will support the education of young people growing up in Ghana.

All of our sites are registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme and our site team take great care to abide by its Code of Considerate Practice, designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements.  We are really pleased to report that last week our Sidcup Storyhouse scheme and our project at Wimbledon High School were rated ‘Excellent’ by the scheme’s monitor.  Sites need to score 27/45 to be compliant and our projects were awarded scores of 42 and 43 respectively.  Both sites have      respected and engaged with the local community, considered and minimised our environmental impact and ensured the wellbeing of their workforce.  We are really proud to know that these two Neilcott sites are leaving a positive legacy through the implementation of best practice. Congratulations and thanks go to Mike Jameson, Lewis Parry and their teams for this excellent achievement.  For more information on the Considerate Constructors Scheme please visit www.ccscheme.org.uk

Raising money for Naomi House and Jacksplace

After being unable to run our annual Cheltenham event last year due to Covid, we were really pleased to welcome clients and architects back to Balls Brothers, Minsters Court to enjoy an afternoon of networking and the Cheltenham races.  At every event we aim to raise money for our nominated charity of the year via a raffle, with prizes being kindly donated by our longstanding subcontractors.  This year’s nominated charity is Naomi House and Jacksplace. Naomi House and Jacksplace are hospices supporting life limited and life threatened children and young adults from Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Dorset and beyond. Naomi House first opened in 1997 to offer care and support to children who were not expected to live until adulthood.  Jacksplace is the only hospice for young adults in the region, offering the care and support they need, but also giving them the independence they often crave. After an incredibly successful event we are pleased to report that we raised £460 for the charity, which will be doubled by Neilcott and added to our running total. For more information on the important work of these two hospices or to donate please visit www.naomihouse.org.uk
