Skills for a sustainable skyline taskforce

#Announcement – We are joining the City of London Corporation’s “Skills for a Sustainable Skyline Taskforce”, with our Sustainability & Submissions Director Ashleigh Goss as an Associate Member of the Task Group. Joining other influential and representative leaders from across the sustainable commercial built environment, we will be championing the Taskforce and supplying insights and resources for the Task Groups. The Taskforce has been created in response to the growing skills gap in the built environment sector, which has been creating a significant barrier to achieving London’s net zero carbon targets. Composed of employers, education and training providers, industry bodies and national and local government, to address the green skills gaps in the commercial built environment. Neilcott is excited to be involved with such influential and important initiatives. Click here to read more about the initiative & recommendations in the Skyline Skills Report.

Stephen lawrence prize shortlist

Our Chowdhury Walk development on Daubeney Road has been shortlisted for yet another award! RIBA has announced the 6-strong shortlist for the Stephen Lawrence Prize 2024, with projects presenting a fusion of social purpose and restorative design. Founded by Baroness Doreen Lawrence OBE and the Marco Goldschmeid Foundation, the annual prize was established in 1998 in memory of Stephen Lawrence, a teenager and aspiring architect who was the victim of a fatal racist attack in 1993. Intended to encourage new talent and inspire others in the early stages of their architectural career, the award exclusively recognises projects led by an early career project architect. This is typically someone who has qualified within five years prior to the project’s completion date. It is an honour to see our project make the shortlist, which is a sculptural infill development heralding the beginnings of an ambitious programme of new generation council housing by London Borough of Hackney. Congratulations to all those involved, in particular AL-JAWAD PIKE, who designed the Chowdhury Walk development.

AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards Shortlist

We are thrilled to share that our project, The Temple Building, Brighton Girls School designed by Walters & Cohen Architects has been shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards 2024, in the category of Conservation and Historic (up to £5 million). The AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards celebrate architectural expertise and ingenuity in the physical and environmental adaption and upgrade of buildings, and the reuse of building materials and structure in response to the climate emergency and changing requirements of use. Works Neilcott Construction Limited delivered for the Grade II Listed Temple Building included the internal configuration of the Basement, Ground Floor, First and Second floors to provide upgraded teaching and admin facilities. The ground floor was converted into a coffee-shop-style space for everyday study and socialising as well as presentations, conferences and events. A library/study, presentation room and makerspace surrounding the main area are easily adaptable so that they can be used separately or together. Works also converted the basement into a music centre, with music classrooms, practice rooms, a flexible performance space and specialist music storage. Whilst the second floor provides a new sixth for space. To ensure the space was as functional and as practical as it could be, we conducted workshops with students of the school, who gave great insights into what they wanted for studying and socialising, particularly in terms of furniture.

Architects’ Journal – YMCA

Stunning photos from our YMCA project in the Architects’ Journal. The scheme’s first phase provides purpose-built supported living for 121 residents in south-west London, with ensuite bathrooms, shared cooking & communal facilities, a public gym and café. The space also provides training and counselling spaces, and commercial space for let, all of which will support the YMCA’s residents journey to independent living. The YMCA St Paul’s Group is a provider of youth and community services and is one of London’s largest providers of specialist supported housing. YMCA residents had active involvement in designing the internal layouts for the building and choosing furniture, collaborating with interior designer Space Positive – who specialises in psychologically informed environments and trauma informed spaces. The buildings sustainability features include extensive green roofs to provide insulation, absorb rainwater and create a habitat for wildlife, alongside bird and bat boxes designed to encourage birds and bats into the areas. SCC’s Children’s Summer Event

Neilcott Construction Limited were pleased to sponsor Surrey County Council‘s Fish and Chip van and prizes for the Tombola stall at SCC’s Children’s Summer Event. Held this July for Surrey’s looked-after children and foster carers, the event offered all a choice of delicious freshly cooked fish and chips and a soft drink to enjoy in the warm sunshine. Our contributions to SCC’s Amazon wishlist provided many toys and games which were given out as Tombola prizes and the day was a huge success. A key part of what we do at Neilcott, is support and give back to the communities that we build in and we are so happy to have been a part of making this day happen. Thank you SCC!

RIBA Stirling Prize Shortlist

The RIBA Stirling Prize 2024 Shortlist has landed & we are happy to share that our project for London Borough of Hackney, the Chowdhury Walk development at Daubeney Road, has made the list! Designed by award-winning architect AL-JAWAD PIKE, the Chowdhury Walk development is part of almost 2,000 new homes that Hackney has built since 2018, to help tackle the borough’s housing crisis – and some of the first in a new range of developments that see the repurposing of under-used land, car parks and garages to create high-quality new homes. Neilcott undertook the demolition of 25 garages and construction of 11 new homes, providing a mix of new 2 & 3 bed homes, with one fully accessible 4-bed family house. Formed of CLT structures & clad externally in brickwork, we also added external landscape enhancements, including attractive ground paving throughout, with planters in front of each house.
