We are thrilled to share that our project, The Temple Building, Brighton Girls School designed by Walters & Cohen Architects has been shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards 2024, in the category of Conservation and Historic (up to £5 million).
The AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards celebrate architectural expertise and ingenuity in the physical and environmental adaption and upgrade of buildings, and the reuse of building materials and structure in response to the climate emergency and changing requirements of use.
Works Neilcott Construction Limited delivered for the Grade II Listed Temple Building included the internal configuration of the Basement, Ground Floor, First and Second floors to provide upgraded teaching and admin facilities. The ground floor was converted into a coffee-shop-style space for everyday study and socialising as well as presentations, conferences and events. A library/study, presentation room and makerspace surrounding the main area are easily adaptable so that they can be used separately or together. Works also converted the basement into a music centre, with music classrooms, practice rooms, a flexible performance space and specialist music storage. Whilst the second floor provides a new sixth for space.
To ensure the space was as functional and as practical as it could be, we conducted workshops with students of the school, who gave great insights into what they wanted for studying and socialising, particularly in terms of furniture.
